Early, Personalized Eye Care for Every Stage of Development

Children’s vision changes quickly, and routine eye exams are essential to support healthy development. Every child is different, and we take the time to build trust and make their visit feel safe, relaxed, and positive in a warm, family-friendly environment.

Dr. Paula Kelbley brings gentle, attentive care to every pediatric visit. As a participating InfantSEE® provider with specialized training in pediatric vision and binocular development, she ensures even the youngest patients feel safe and supported.

We’re proud to care for the children and grandchildren of families who have trusted us for over 30 years.

When Should Children Have Their Eyes Examined?

Because young children rarely recognize or report vision problems, early exams are critical. The American Optometric Association recommends:

Infants: First eye exam between 6 to 12 months.

Toddlers: Follow-up exam at age 3.

School-age children: Before starting kindergarten, then annually.

These evaluations help detect common concerns like eye turn, lazy eye, and refractive errors, all of which are easier to treat when caught early.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam

Each exam is designed with your child’s age and developmental stage in mind. We check visual acuity, focusing skills, eye coordination, and screen for early signs of eye disease.

Exams may include:

  • Age-appropriate vision testing
  • Eye alignment and tracking assessments
  • Binocular vision and depth perception evaluation
  • Detection of refractive errors
  • Eye health screening

Parents are welcome to stay with their child during the appointment, and our Powell team will clearly explain all findings and next steps. Whether it’s your baby’s first screening or your child is nervous about eye drops, we’ll talk you through every step and work at their pace.

Supporting Academic Success and Long-Term Vision Health

Vision problems can affect a child’s ability to read, concentrate, and succeed in school. Regular eye exams help ensure your child’s eyes are working well together and supporting their learning and development.

Children with nearsightedness may benefit from myopia management strategies, such as soft multifocal contact lenses. These lenses can slow the progression of myopia and reduce the risk of future vision complications.

Whether it’s your baby’s first screening or your child's follow-up exam, we’ll talk you through every step and work at their pace.
